Molybdenum market update on May 29, 2026
The domestic molybdenum prices trended down first and then up this week, with a strong wait-and-see sentiment in the market and limited new orders. At the start of the week, affected by weak downstream demand, strong willingness among suppliers to cash in profits and a sluggish international molybdenum market, molybdenum prices continued the downward trend from the previous week with a relatively large decline. Towards the weekend, the fluctuating rise of international molybdenum prices and growing enthusiasm of downstream users for bargain-hunting purchases jointly drove suppliers to raise their quotations.
According to statistics from CTIA GROUP, the price of molybdenum concentrate decreased by RMB 90 per ton-degree this week, a drop of 1.76%; the price of ferromolybdenum decreased by RMB 18,000 per ton, a drop of 5.37%; the price of molybdenum oxide decreased by RMB 90 per ton-degree, a drop of 1.73%; the price of sodium molybdate decreased by RMB 3,000 per ton, a drop of 1.32%; the price of ammonium heptamolybdate decreased by RMB 2,000 per ton, a drop of 0.64%; the price of molybdenum powder decreased by RMB 2 per kilogram, a drop of 0.33%.
In terms of news, data released by the China Iron and Steel Industry Association showed that key steel enterprises reported a steel inventory of 18.77 million tons in mid-May 2026, increased by 1.89 million tons or 11.2% month-on-month. The figure was increased by 4.63 million tons or 32.8% compared with the beginning of the year, increased by 140,000 tons or 0.8% compared with the same period of last month, increased by 2.42 million tons or 14.8% compared with the same period of last year, and increased by 1.94 million tons or 11.5% compared with the same period of the year before last. By region, steel inventory in Northeast China increased by 210,000 tons, that in North China increased by 180,000 tons, that in East China increased by 690,000 tons, that in Southwest China increased by 70,000 tons, and that in Central and South China increased by 740,000 tons. The steel inventory in Northwest China remained basically unchanged from the previous ten-day period.
