Molybdenum market update on May 12, 2026
The domestic molybdenum market as a whole has entered a phase of accelerated upward movement. Among them, molybdenum concentrate was further raised by RMB 170/ton-degree, to RMB 5,050/ton-degree; ferromolybdenum price increased by RMB 10,000/ton, to RMB 320,000/ton; molybdenum powder price increased by RMB 20/kg, to RMB 588/kg. According to CTIA GROUP, the current prices of many molybdenum products have exceeded the highest points of 2025 and 2024, but are still below the peak of 2023. In 2023, the highest price of molybdenum concentrate was RMB 5,600/ton-degree, and ferromolybdenum reached RMB 400,000/ton.
According to CTIA GROUP, the current round of molybdenum price rise is mainly supported by multiple factors: steel bidding volume and price performed well, molybdenum mining companies generally hoard supply and hold prices, coupled with the continuous recovery of the international molybdenum market; meanwhile, Peru issued an emergency energy crisis decree, causing a decline in the production capacity of some mines, which further strengthened the bullish market sentiment. Data from the United States Geological Survey show that, by the end of 2025, molybdenum reserves in Peru were about 1,000 kilotons, accounting for 5.88% of the global total; in 2025, Peru's molybdenum production was 39,000 tons, decreased by 6.92% year-on-year, accounting for 15% of the global total production.
Regarding trade data, customs statistics show that, in 2026, China’s cumulative steel exports reached 34,214,000 tons, decreased by 9.7% year-on-year; steel imports were 1,804,000 tons, decreased by 13.4% year-on-year; imports of iron ore and its concentrates were 418,587,000 tons, increased by 8.0% year-on-year. In April, China exported 9,498,000 tons of steel, increased by 4.0% month-on-month; imported 465,000 tons of steel, decreased by 9.2% month-on-month; and imported 103,854,000 tons of iron ore and its concentrates, decreased by 0.8% month-on-month.
