1,174 Tons of Illegally Mined Tungsten Ore Seized

According to the Legal Daily, the Environmental Resources and Food and Drug Crime Investigation Team of the Heshuo County Public Security Bureau in Xinjiang recently cracked an illegal mining case, arresting 16 suspects and seizing 1,174 tons of illegally mined tungsten ore and a batch of tools used in the crime, effectively curbing the trend of mining-related crimes.

Tungsten, known as the "teeth of industry," is an extremely important strategic metal resource, widely used in aerospace, military, electronics, and machinery manufacturing. Due to its high value and critical uses, it has become a key target for illegal mining activities. According to China Tungsten Online, as of March 31, 2026, the price of 65% black tungsten concentrate reached RMB 1 million/ton, an increase of nearly 600% compared to the beginning of 2025, with the price doubling in the first quarter of 2026.

According to the Legal Daily, to combat illegal mining and protect ecological security, the Heshuo County Public Security Bureau has proactively investigated and precisely targeted its efforts, routinely conducting patrols of mineral resources within its jurisdiction and ensuring smooth reporting channels to guarantee the timely discovery and rapid handling of illegal mining leads.

On April 8, the Heshuo County Public Security Bureau received a report from the public that someone was illegally mining ore in the mountainous area 8 kilometers north of the Yushugou service area in Wushitala Hui Township. Upon receiving the report, the Environmental, Food and Drug Crime Investigation Team acted swiftly, organizing officers to rush to the scene and simultaneously conducting on-site investigations and personnel interviews, apprehending suspects Zhou and Wei on the spot.

During the on-site investigation and evidence collection, police discovered that the individuals involved had not obtained any mining permits and were illegally conducting mining operations. A total of 1,174 tons of illegally mined tungsten ore were seized at the scene, along with two tungsten lamps, three excavators, one loader, and seven large trucks used in the crime.

Under preliminary interrogation, Zhou and others confessed to their illegal mining activities. To date, a total of 16 suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. Six of them have been criminally detained on suspicion of illegal mining, while the remaining 10 have been released on bail pending trial.
