Rare earth market update on March 25, 2026
The domestic rare earth market is weak, with low purchasing activity from magnetic material enterprises, leading to a lack of momentum for some suppliers to further raise their prices. The prices of praseodymium-neodymium oxide, praseodymium-neodymium metal, and gadolinium oxide have decreased by approximately RMB 10,000/ton, RMB 20,000/ton, and RMB 7,000/ton, respectively. In this market environment, some industry participants expect the rare earth market to continue its weak performance in the short term.
Against the backdrop of a complex global economic situation and weak terminal demand, downstream orders from sectors such as new energy vehicles (NEVs) and wind power are not being effectively transmitted. Meanwhile, affected by the high rare earth prices in the previous period and the current high oil and gas prices, the cost pressure on downstream rare earth production enterprises is significant. Many enterprises are focusing on low inventory and just-in-time purchasing, with a strong wait-and-see attitude. Under the prevailing "buy on the rise, not on the fall" mentality, the actual transaction volume in the market remains low.
In terms of news, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reported that in February 2026, China's automobile production and sales were 1.672 million and 1.805 million units, respectively, down 20.5% and 15.2% year-on-year. Among them, the production and sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) were 694,000 and 765,000 units, respectively, down 21.8% and 14.2% year-on-year. NEV new car sales accounted for 42.4% of the total new car sales. From January to February, China's automobile production and sales totaled 4.122 million and 4.152 million units, respectively, down 9.5% and 8.8% year-on-year. Among them, the production and sales of NEVs were 1.735 million and 1.71 million units, respectively, down 8.8% and 6.9% year-on-year. NEV new car sales accounted for 41.2% of the total new car sales.
